DIY: “No Bake” Hamantaschen
Make a delicious Purim feast for little ones!
One of the mitzvot (commandments) of Purim is to have a feast with family and friends! When celebrating with small friends, I love making “No Bake” Hamantaschen - the official pastry of Purim. The cookie is known for having three-corners, which resemble the hat of Haman, the villain of the Purim story.
What’s special about these Hamantaschen, is they are as easy to make as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. No baking is required, and children can get in on the fun of making them too!
Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:
Bread
Filling (we like strawberry jam and chocolate hazelnut spread and peanut butter, but pick your favorite)!
Round cookie cutter
Colorful toppings (sprinkles, coconut flakes and dried fruit)
Rolling pin
With just a little help from an adult, young children should be able to make their own hamantaschen. So let’s get baking!
Cut a circle out of a piece of bread with your round cookie cutter. Make a stack of bread circles for as many hamantaschen as you’d like!
Gently flatten the bread with a rolling pin.
Put a spoonful of jam or chocolate spread in the center of the bread.
Pinch three corners of the circle together (use the photos above as a guide).
Top with sprinkles, coconut flakes or dried fruit.
Make a plateful to share with friends or pack them in a lunchbox!
If you’d like, you can say a blessing before eating your hamantaschen. In Judaism, there are blessings you can say for almost every moment - even for eating “no bake” hamantaschen during Purim!
Ba-Ruch A-tah A-do-noi, Elo-hai-nu Me-lech Ha-o-lam, Ha-motzi Leh-chem Min Ha-aretz.
There are so many ways to celebrate Purim! Maybe it’s packing a Purim-themed lunchbox, making joyful noise makers or making mini royal crowns, playing “dress-up” with DIY clothespin dolls, discovering a favorite Purim story or making gluten-free double orange Hamantaschen. Let us know how you celebrate in the comments below!
Chag sameach! Happy Purim!
